Gyeongbokgung Palace Gyeongbokgung Palace is the imperial and primary palace of Joseon Dynasty. Located in the center of Seoul, this is the place where you can physically feel the dignity and grace in royal culture. The part that connects Gwanghwamun Gate and Gyotaejeon (main residing quarters by the Queen) is the key part of the palace, which was built symmetrically according to the geometric order.

These unique architectural patterns is present only in the buildings within royal palaces.

Animal Statues Guarding the Palace

Geunjeongjeon in Gyeongbokgung Palace was where the Emperor held court, important events or welcomed foreign delegates. The place is “guarded” by 56 statues of animals. From the bottom left, you can see the statue of turtle, ox and monkey. The last one is tianlu, which is a Chinese mythical hybrid creature that protects the palace from evil spirits. There are 4 tianlus in Yeongjecheon between Heungnyemun and Geunjeongmun.

Blue, red, yellow, white and black are the 5 major colors being used widely in various patterns and designs to fill the buildings with vibrancy. The splendid ceiling patterns with lotus and other royal flowers illustrates artistic delicacy in royal culture.

Kkotdam in Jagyeongjeon

Jagyeongjeon is the place where the Empress used to stay, which is surrounded by Kkotdam decorated with red and splendid patterns of seasonal flowers and trees such as apricot blossom, peach, peony, pomegranate, chrysanthemum, and bamboos. These symbols represent longevity, wealth, and fame. From the upper right corner: peach for longevity, pomegranate for abundance and many children, apricot blossom for spring and peony for prosperity.
